Soft and Fluffy Honey Wheat Bread
Who doesn’t love the delicious smell of homemade bread wafting through the house? I know my family and I do. In fact, I think we go through more bread in our house when it’s homemade rather than buying it at the store. There’s just something comforting about walking into the kitchen and smelling fresh bread baking in the oven.
This Soft and Fluffy Honey Wheat Bread Recipe has become a favorite in our house, for so many reasons. Not only is it made with wholesome ingredients like honey and whole wheat flour, but there are also no eggs or dairy in the recipe. It’s simple, hearty, and makes delicious bread that works perfectly for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying warm with a little butter.
This bread recipe came from my wonderful mother-in-law when my husband and I first got married, and it quickly became a staple in our home. Recipes passed down from family members always seem to become the most treasured, and this one is no exception. Over the years I’ve made it countless times, and every time I pull fresh loaves out of the oven, it reminds me of those early years of marriage and learning how to cook for my own family.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that I can make six loaves at once. If I’m already pulling out ingredients and making bread dough, I might as well make enough to last us awhile. Homemade bread disappears quickly in our house. I honestly think my family eats more bread when I make it from scratch than when I buy it from the grocery store.
And can we talk about the smell for a second? Fresh homemade bread baking is one of the best scents in the world. It fills the entire house and somehow makes everything feel cozy. Even my kids seem to magically wander into the kitchen asking when the bread will be ready.
Why You’ll Love This Soft and Fluffy Honey Wheat Bread Recipe
There are so many reasons this recipe has become one of my go-to bread recipes:
- Makes multiple loaves at once
- Soft and fluffy texture
- Lightly sweetened with honey
- No eggs or dairy
- Great for sandwiches and toast
- Freezes well
- Uses simple pantry ingredients
Another thing I love about making homemade bread is knowing exactly what goes into it. When I buy bread at the store, I sometimes look at the ingredient list and wonder what half the ingredients even are. With homemade bread, there’s no mystery. I know every ingredient that goes into these loaves.
Whole Wheat or Half and Half?
One of the great things about this recipe is that you can adjust it based on your preferences.
You can absolutely make this bread using all whole wheat flour if desired. If you decide to go that route, you may want to add a little vital wheat gluten to help improve the texture and create a softer loaf.
Personally, I prefer using half whole wheat flour and half bread flour.
Why do I make it this way?
First, I love the flavor combination. You still get that hearty whole wheat taste without the bread becoming too heavy.
Second, it saves time because I don’t have to grind as much wheat. Yes, I grind my own wheat! Fresh ground wheat has incredible flavor, but cutting it with bread flour makes the process a little faster.
Third, bread flour already contains more gluten, which helps create that soft and fluffy texture I’m looking for.
Tips for Making Soft and Fluffy Homemade Wheat Bread
A few simple tips can make a big difference when making homemade bread:
Don’t add too much flour. Bread dough should be soft and slightly tacky. Adding too much flour can create dense loaves.
Allow enough rise time. Be patient and let the dough rise fully.
Brush with butter after baking. If desired, brushing melted butter over the top creates a soft buttery crust.
Freeze extra loaves. Since this recipe makes six loaves, freeze extras for later.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about baking your own bread from scratch. Maybe it’s the smell, maybe it’s the warmth, or maybe it’s knowing you made something wholesome for your family. Whatever it is, this Soft and Fluffy Honey Wheat Bread Recipe has become one of those recipes I come back to again and again.
